I Am a Bird in a Cage

I am a bird in a cage,
kept by hands that think I’m too weak to fly,
convinced I would wither, fall, and fade
if ever set free beneath the sky.

But little do they know, within me lies
a fire, fierce and blazing bright—
a silent storm, a spark that defies,
waiting to rise and claim the night.

Little do they know,
they are making jokes about a phoenix,
who knows how to rise again from the ashes.

Poem Meaning / Explanation

This poem reflects the feeling of being trapped—emotionally, mentally, or by the expectations of others. The “bird in a cage” symbolizes a person whose potential is underestimated. Others believe the bird is too weak to survive on its own, too fragile to fly, and too dependent to ever find freedom. But inside, the bird carries a powerful truth: an inner fire.

The imagery of the “silent storm” and “blazing spark” represents hidden strength, resilience, and the determination to break free. The poem then shifts into phoenix symbolism—a creature known for rising from its own ashes. This suggests that no matter how many times life breaks or cages the poet, they will rise again, stronger each time.

The poem reminds readers that others may limit you, but your inner strength is limitless. It encourages self-belief, transformation, and reclaiming your power, even when others doubt you.
